Skin Services
-
Recommended every 12 months over the age of 20.
We offer comprehensive full body skin checks to promote sun safety and overall skin health. During your appointment, our experienced GP will conduct a thorough examination of your skin, looking for any unusual moles, spots, or changes in existing lesions.
The doctor will carefully assess all areas of your skin, including those hard-to-see spots like your scalp and back. This check is an important step in identifying any signs of skin cancer or sun damage early on. We encourage you to ask questions about sun protection practices and any concerns you may have. Our goal is to ensure you have the knowledge and resources to keep your skin healthy and safe from the sun’s harmful effects.
-
Skin Spot checks are for 1-2 spots, rather than a comprehensive full body check.
This appointment type is aimed for skin monitoring, suited for patients who have noticed any unusual moles, spots or changes in existing lesions, but do not want a full body check.
-
During your Skin Check appointment, if the doctor identifies any suspicious moles or lesions, they may perform a biopsy to gather more information.
If a biopsy is necessary, the area will be numbed with a local anesthetic for your comfort. The doctor will then remove a small sample of tissue, which typically takes just a few minutes. After the procedure, we’ll provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to aid in your recovery and book you for a wound care and result follow up appointment.
-
Following the return of your results, the doctor may need to excise your mole, or lesion.
If our GP identifies a suspicious lesion that requires further investigation, they may recommend an excision. This minor surgical procedure involves the removal of the lesion along with a margin of healthy skin to ensure complete excision.
The procedure will be performed in our clinic, where the area will be numbed with a local anesthetic for your comfort. The doctor will carefully excise the tissue and close the incision with sutures. This process typically takes only a short time, and you can return home the same day.
After the excision, we will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to promote healing and reduce the risk of infection. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled to monitor your recovery and discuss the pathology results.
Why Skin Checks are vital for Australians
Living in Australia, a country with some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, regular skin checks are crucial for maintaining long-term health. Due to Australia’s strong sun exposure, with over 70% of skin cancers being preventable if caught early, regular skin checks play an essential role in early detection and treatment.
Our skin is our body’s largest organ, and while it’s built to protect us from the sun, it’s also highly vulnerable to harmful UV rays. The sun’s intensity in Australia makes it important to stay vigilant in spotting any changes in moles, freckles, or skin texture. Early detection can save lives by ensuring any abnormal growths are addressed before they turn into more serious conditions.
Whether it's a new mole, a change in appearance of an existing mole, or any unusual growth, consulting a professional can make all the difference. At Hollywood GP Skin Cancer Clinic, we’re committed to ensuring you have the knowledge and care needed to protect your skin and your future.

After a Skin Check (No Procedures Done)
If your doctor did not identify any spots needing treatment:
You’re all done for now!
Continue regular self-monitoring at home and notify us if you notice any new or changing lesions.
Your doctor will advise when to return—typically in 6 to 12 months for a routine follow-up.
If you have a high-risk history, we may recommend more frequent checks.
After a Skin Biopsy
If you had a biopsy taken:
The area may have a small stitch or dressing.
Keep the area dry and covered for the first 24–48 hours or as advised by your doctor.
Avoid heavy exercise or stretching that area for several days.
Mild bruising, tenderness or swelling is normal.
You’ll be contacted with results, usually within 7–10 working days.
You may need to return for stitch removal or further treatment, depending on the result.
Call the clinic if:
You notice signs of infection (increasing redness, pus, heat, swelling)
You’re concerned about pain or bleeding
After Cryotherapy (Freezing Treatment)
You may notice blistering, redness or mild swelling—this is normal and part of the healing process.
Keep the area clean and dry; cover with a simple dressing if needed.
Avoid picking at the blister or scab.
It can take 7–14 days for the area to fully heal.
Let us know if the spot hasn’t healed within 3 weeks or if you have concerns.
After a Minor Surgical Procedure (Excision)
Keep the wound site clean and dry for the period advised by your doctor.
You may have stitches—we’ll let you know if they’re dissolvable or require removal (usually after 7–10 days).
A follow-up appointment will be booked for wound review and to discuss pathology results.
Avoid excessive movement or exercise that could stretch the wound until healed.
Your Results & Follow-Up
Biopsy or excision results are typically available in 7–10 working days.
We will contact you to arrange a follow-up, especially if further treatment is needed.
Even if results are benign, it’s important to attend regular skin checks and continue monitoring your skin at home.
